Our Story

My husband and I owned a few acres of land in KUMBA village in Democratic Republic of Congo and some time back we began using that land to grow a food crop named Yuca (a root vegetable that is used to prepare the staple dish fufu). In 2021, my mom went for the harvest; while her team was working, some school-aged children came to help.

My mother was touched, and she started asking them why they did not go to school. They explained that they had started to attend, but quit because the school was very far away.

The same story was shared from another woman. I realized that there was a great need for a school in the Kumba village. There is currently not a school nearby. The closest school to Kumba is in the commune of Boko located 8 miles from Kumba. I approached my husband with a question: “What can our family do to help these children get a basic education?”

In 2021 Furaha Hope foundation was created. Millions of children in the Democratic Republic of Congo go without an education according to the USAID and UNICEF organizations. Only one third of kids complete 6th grade and less than 10% have basic reading skills. It is even harder for girls and for children in rural villages, like Kumba, to access education.

We are praying for partners, sponsors, and donors to come along side and help us in this much-needed school for the children in the KUMBA Village .
